A Lot On My Plate

Gayle has a list of things she wants to get done in the few remaining days of summer, things like spend more money, buy things, purchase something, use something up so she can buy another one, and laundry. Actually, her list is very proactive, and has a lot of lofty goals that make me feel a little bit, well, lazy. So I decided to put MY list of summer goals onto the blog to show, um, me and the three other people who look at the blog what I'm trying to get accomplished this summer. 

Here's my list of things to write: 

(2) Video game theory essays
(1) Metal Gear Solid essay
(1) Patriotism essay
(10) Chapters revised of Words of the Silenced
(1) Play for Utah Shakespearean Festival (March 1)--Daisy's Doughnuts
(1) Essay for Utah Shakespearean Festival (April 1)
(5) Poems of any sort
(3) The Poets book chapters a week
(?) Things Dinosaurs Eat, a children's book I want to write for Peter and, later, Jeremy

The grand total of that list is over twenty four pieces of writing, with just under a month in which to do it all. The biggest problem is that I can only write for so long before good books, fun video games, mewling babes, or just exhaustion of creative juices takes its toll and I wander away. 

But, hey, it's good to have goals, right?

The second of my "music video essays", I'm exploring the single from Red Hot Chili Peppers' newest album, The Getaway , "Dark Necessities". As I did before, I'm posting the video and the lyrics here on the essay, and encourage you to watch and read along. Rage Against the Video Game Machine?

NOTE: If you haven't read the ' Foregrounding ' blog post or the one entitled ' Rough Draft ', please do that first. They're both short, but they matter a lot for what you're about to read. Okay. Done. Enjoy. Zach de la Rocha: "On truth devoured/Silent play in the shadow of power/A spectacle monopolized/The cameras eyes on choice disguised." Rage Against the Machine's single "Guerilla Radio" from their Battle of Los Angeles album is a reaction against the political circus and faux-choice presentations during the 2000 elections. The quote is not in full context (it is much more political than theoretical) here, but it provides a powerful starting block. A little bit of re-punctuation will help to clarify the thrust: "On truth devoured, silent play in the shadow of power [is] a spectacle [that] monopolized the cameras' eyes-on choice disguised." I Will Possess Your Heart

This is the first of a series of essays in which I look at music videos as an avenue to expanding the meaning of a song. Thanks to friends who have sent me dozens of recommendations, I have a larger quantity of possibilities than I have time to rewatch and analyze them. Nevertheless, I hope that I can dig something out that people enjoy, even if their suggestion didn't make the cut. I'm starting with an easy one to try to get myself situated.
